Production permits in New Zealand depend on where and what you’re shooting. Urban councils such as Auckland and Wellington usually require location permits for commercial stills work, while natural areas often need Department of Conservation concessions. IDC manages every stage of the process, from identifying permit requirements to liaising with authorities and securing approvals within 5–15 working days. Our strong relationships with Film NZ, local councils, and conservation bodies mean international photography clients can focus on the creative while we handle compliance, insurance, and public-liability details.
Yes. International productions, including stills and mixed-media campaigns, can qualify for the New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG), which offers a 20 percent rebate on eligible local expenditure and potential uplifts for large-scale projects. GST (Goods and Services Tax) can also be zero-rated for qualifying international clients. While the NZSPG is primarily aimed at motion projects, IDC helps determine eligibility for hybrid or content-based shoots and ensures your budgeting and reporting align with local tax and rebate rules.
New Zealand’s seasons run opposite to the Northern Hemisphere, summer from December to February, winter from June to August. Auckland provides mild, workable conditions most of the year, while Queenstown offers stronger seasonal contrast for snow, autumn tones, and alpine scenes. Summer delivers long daylight hours ideal for extended shoot schedules, while spring and autumn bring softer light and fewer tourists. IDC advises on seasonal planning, lighting conditions, and location access so you can time your photography for both creative impact and logistical efficiency.
New Zealand’s compact geography allows productions to move quickly between dramatically different landscapes, urban skylines, beaches, rainforests, and alpine backdrops often within hours of each other. IDC provides comprehensive location-scouting services, access negotiations, and logistics coordination, including private property clearances and Māori land consultations. For remote or elevated sites, we arrange helicopter transport, 4WD support, and crew accommodation. Our local insight ensures your photographers capture the most authentic New Zealand imagery with minimal disruption to schedule or budget.
Auckland and Wellington host world-class rental houses for camera, lighting, and grip equipment, while specialised gear can be sourced nationwide. IDC connects international clients with award-winning New Zealand photographers, camera assistants, digital operators, gaffers, and production managers, all accustomed to global campaign standards. If specialised items must be brought in, we handle ATA Carnet paperwork and customs coordination. Our network ensures that your on-ground team in New Zealand has both the technical capability and creative skill needed for a seamless shoot.
